Footage circulating on social media and broadcast by Iranian state television reportedly depicts the remains of an American aircraft and helicopter in Isfahan, Iran.

The U.S. military successfully executed a daring operation to rescue two pilots after their fighter jet was shot down by Iranian forces.

American troops managed to extract the pilot from a dangerous situation behind enemy lines, while the second airman took refuge in a mountain crevice as Iranian authorities urged citizens to assist in his capture.

On Friday, a U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle was hit by Iranian fire, prompting the two-man crew to eject just in time and land in hostile territory.

The pilot was rescued a few hours later after U.S. military personnel pinpointed his location and launched a rescue mission. However, the weapons specialist from the crew went missing, complicating the recovery operation, which involved the CIA and specialized aircraft after initial efforts encountered challenges in enemy territory.

A U.S. official confirmed that the aircraft was downed over Isfahan province, with the two airmen ejecting separately.

While U.S. President Donald Trump and other officials described the operation as almost cinematic, the rescue team confronted significant challenges, including two Black Hawk helicopters coming under fire and issues with two transport planes that had to be destroyed to prevent sensitive equipment from falling into enemy hands.

The rescue mission commenced with high efficiency, as U.S. commandos, undetected, infiltrated deep into Iran under the cover of darkness. They scaled a 2,100-meter ridge to retrieve the stranded airman, moving him toward a covert meeting point before dawn on Sunday.

However, the operation faced a critical setback when two C-130 transport aircraft that had transported approximately 100 special operations forces to the rough terrain south of Tehran experienced mechanical failures, preventing them from taking off, a U.S. official revealed on the condition of anonymity.

This unexpected development placed elite commandos at risk of being stranded behind enemy lines. Their commanders made a bold choice to send additional aircraft into Iran for a staggered extraction, a decision that resulted in a tense wait for the commandos.

A U.S. official recounted the moment as a significant turning point, attributing the successful outcome to swift decision-making.

The extraction operation began overnight on Saturday and involved hundreds of special operations personnel, including members of Navy SEAL Team 6. The Navy commandos were assigned the task of retrieving the airman, while U.S. attack aircraft provided cover, according to reports from the New York Times.

U.S. aviators receive Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) training to prepare for potential scenarios in hostile environments. However, few are proficient in Persian, making it difficult to remain undetected while awaiting rescue.

The airman, injured during his ejection, managed to walk and reportedly climbed a 2,100-meter ridge before hiding in a crevice. A source familiar with the operation indicated that he sustained a sprained ankle but was able to establish contact with U.S. military forces, verifying his identity—a crucial measure to avoid entrapment.

To prevent Iranian forces from locating the stranded officer, the CIA executed a deception strategy, disseminating false information that U.S. forces had already rescued the airman. The U.S. military also employed tactics such as electronic jamming and bombing key routes to hinder access to the area, according to a source familiar with the planning.

The aircraft ultimately dispatched to extract the airman were smaller turboprop models, capable of landing in confined spaces.

Iranian officials encouraged local residents to assist security forces in the search for the airman, recognizing the potential political and military significance of capturing him alive. A host on an Iranian state television channel urged locals in the mountainous region where the fighter jet crashed to report any “enemy pilot” to authorities, promising rewards for such actions.

This led to an intense race over the weekend, with social media showcasing images of U.S. aircraft and helicopters flying at low altitudes over Iran.

The initial search operation faced aggressive resistance from Iranian forces after the F-15 pilot was rescued on Friday. Two Black Hawk helicopters involved in the search were struck by Iranian fire but managed to evade capture.

According to U.S. Central Command, the ongoing conflict has resulted in the deaths of 13 U.S. military personnel and over 300 injuries, though no American troops have been captured by Iran.

While Iran’s military has claimed that the U.S. operation was “completely foiled,” it has not provided a comprehensive account of the events that transpired. On Sunday evening, an Iranian news outlet released a photo from the Revolutionary Guards that allegedly depicted the “skull of an American soldier amid the wreckage of a destroyed aircraft.”
