The Kolkata Knight Riders have secured their first victory of the IPL season, triumphing in their seventh match against the Rajasthan Royals, thanks in part to Cameron Green’s swift contribution of 27 runs off just 13 deliveries.
Green, the high-profile Australian player, was unfortunately dismissed by an impressive diving stumping from Rajasthan’s wicketkeeper, Dhruv Jurel.
In another match, Cooper Connolly from Western Australia showcased his batting prowess by scoring 87 runs off 46 balls, helping the Punjab Kings maintain their unbeaten streak this season.
After a series of challenging matches, Cameron Green finally experienced a win with the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens. Following his noteworthy performance of 79 runs just two days prior in Ahmedabad, Green played a crucial role in securing the Knight Riders’ first win of the season, defeating the Rajasthan Royals by four wickets.
Rajasthan opted to bat first, managing to score only 155 runs for the loss of nine wickets. They capitalized on a powerplay over where Green’s bowling figures were 0-27, which included four wides and a total of 22 runs, featuring sixes from the talented Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (46 runs off 28 balls) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (39 runs off 29 balls).
In response, the Knight Riders faltered early, slipping to a precarious 2-5 within the first eight balls. However, Green’s quickfire 27 runs helped stabilize the innings before he fell victim to a remarkable stumping by Jurel off Ravi Bishnoi.
The Knight Riders faced difficulties in their chase until Rinku Singh delivered a stellar performance, finishing unbeaten with 53 runs off 34 balls, leading the team to victory with a total of 161 runs for the loss of six wickets.
Meanwhile, in New Chandigarh, Cooper Connolly’s outstanding batting display significantly contributed to the Punjab Kings’ continued success under the guidance of coach Ricky Ponting. The massive scoreboard at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium celebrated Connolly with “Super Duper Cooper” as he smashed 87 runs off just 46 balls against the Lucknow Super Giants.
Remarkably, Connolly started slowly, scoring only 19 runs off his first 22 balls while his teammate Priyansh Arya was in impressive form, scoring 93 runs off 37 balls. “At 19 off 22, there was a little bit of panic, but I just tried to compose myself,” Connolly recounted. “Then a couple of nice shots hit the middle and you start to get going.”
Despite his initial slow pace, Connolly nearly matched Arya’s explosive scoring rate as the duo formed a formidable partnership of 182 runs in just 13 overs, including five sixes off a single over from Aiden Markram that yielded 32 runs, three of which were hit consecutively by Connolly.
With Marcus Stoinis adding a quick 29 runs off 16 balls as the innings concluded, Punjab posted a total of 254 runs for seven wickets, marking the highest score of the IPL season. Lucknow struggled to keep up with the required run rate, with Mitch Marsh contributing a modest 40 runs off 28 balls.
Xavier Bartlett had a tough outing, conceding 54 runs in his four overs without taking any wickets, but he did manage to take a couple of catches. Ultimately, the Kings restricted Lucknow to 200 runs for five wickets, securing a 54-run victory that solidified Punjab’s lead at the top of the IPL standings by three points.
