Amsterdam has made history by becoming the first capital city globally to prohibit advertisements for meat and fossil fuels in public spaces. This initiative aims to deter consumers from purchasing products that contribute significantly to carbon emissions.
As of May 1, advertising for various products, including meat, airlines, and gasoline-powered vehicles, is banned in the city, following a legislative push from the GreenLeft and Party for the Animals.
Anneke Veenhoff, a city councillor representing GreenLeft, articulated the rationale behind the ban, stating, “If you are investing substantial tax resources and enacting numerous policies aimed at addressing climate change in Amsterdam, it seems contradictory to allow public spaces to promote the opposite.” She further commented, “When trying to overcome an addiction, it is counterproductive to have constant reminders around.”
The scope of the ban also extends to advertisements for cruises, distant vacation spots, and various meat products, including beef, chicken, pork, and fish.
In 2022, Haarlem, another Dutch city, was the first in the world to initiate a ban on most meat advertising in public areas, which became legally enforceable two years later, alongside regulations against fossil fuel ads.
The Hague is set to become the first city to implement a legally binding ban on fossil fuel advertisements in 2025.
This policy has faced opposition from several organizations, including the Dutch Advertisers’ Association, which argued last October that such restrictions conflict with fundamental principles of commercial communication and freedom of expression. The Dutch Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators criticized the Amsterdam ban as an excessive limitation on commercial freedoms, while the Dutch Meat Association deemed it an unwelcome attempt to manipulate consumer choices.
Globally, over 50 cities are either enforcing or considering bans on advertisements for fossil fuels and meat products as part of a broader effort to reduce carbon consumption.
In June 2024, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for a prohibition on advertising related to oil, gas, and coal, highlighting the urgent need to address the ongoing climate crisis. He remarked, “In the context of climate change, we are not the dinosaurs; we are the meteor. We are not merely at risk; we are the threat.”
