The internal turmoil within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) intensified on Tuesday as Punjab’s Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and dissenting Rajya Sabha members led by Raghav Chadha both appealed to President Droupadi Murmu for intervention regarding their ongoing dispute.
This escalating conflict stemmed from a significant division within the party, which occurred last month when seven AAP MPs defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), igniting a complex legal and political struggle centered on issues of defection, legitimacy, and party control.
Chadha, accompanied by fellow MPs Rajinder Gupta, Ashok Mittal, and Sandeep Pathak, met with President Murmu to request constitutional protection against what they described as retaliatory actions following their party switch.
Meanwhile, Mann conveyed to the President his proposal for a constitutional amendment that would enable constituents to recall their elected officials. He confirmed that AAP has initiated legal proceedings against the defecting members.
In a show of solidarity, Mann was backed by 90 MLAs who gathered outside Rashtrapati Bhavan. He stated that the defection of seven MPs to the BJP represented a significant violation of democratic principles. “These members have unilaterally declared their allegiance to a new party. This act undermines the Constitution. It cannot be permissible for them to simply abandon their party without due process,” he remarked, emphasizing that such actions mock democratic values. Mann further pointed out that the BJP currently holds two MLAs and six Rajya Sabha seats in Punjab, questioning the legitimacy of this power shift.
After his meeting with the President, Mann reported that she promised to consult constitutional experts and seek a resolution. He accused the BJP of attempting to manipulate the political landscape through intimidation tactics involving agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Addressing the issue of allegations from the rebel MPs regarding political vendetta, Mann asserted, “Just because they have joined the BJP does not shield them from accountability. They cannot evade legal consequences. If any misuse of authority is reported, the Punjab Police will take action.” He criticized the notion that the defectors could find refuge in other states, emphasizing that their actions would not be tolerated in Punjab.
Mann also highlighted recent police searches at Ashok Mittal’s residence, questioning the sudden security detail he received following his defection. He criticized the BJP’s approach of integrating controversial figures from other parties while simultaneously labeling them as corrupt.
Earlier in the day, Mann led AAP legislators to Delhi, asserting that they stood united in their support of him. He communicated to the President that all MLAs were in solidarity, and she acknowledged their presence and signatures in a letter.
In response, Chadha articulated his grievances to the President, claiming that the Punjab government had launched a vendetta against them after their transition. He articulated that their decision was made through a democratic process and questioned the rationale behind the targeting. Chadha indicated that he and his colleagues had faced legal actions and raids, which he deemed inappropriate given their political affiliation.
Chadha emphasized the disparity in power, noting that while the AAP governs only Punjab, the BJP wields authority over 21 states, thus possessing broader resources at their disposal. He relayed that the President assured them of protection under the Constitution.
Chadha condemned the misuse of governmental resources, arguing that such actions are unconstitutional and detrimental to the business community in Punjab. He criticized the raids and legal actions taken against them, asserting that they would confront these challenges legally and remain steadfast in their political pursuits.
In closing, Sandeep Pathak reflected on his initial hopes when joining AAP, expressing disappointment over the current situation. He urged the AAP to pursue legal avenues rather than resorting to intimidation, reaffirming their commitment to fighting these allegations through proper channels.
