DMK Minister Falls Short by a Single Vote as Vijay’s TVK Claims Victory in Tiruppattur Constituency

Vijay, an actor who has transitioned into politics, celebrated a significant victory with his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in the Tiruppattur constituency of Tamil Nadu. The win was secured by a remarkably narrow margin of just one vote, effectively unseating a current minister from the DMK party.

Seenivasa Sethupathy R, the candidate from TVK, garnered 83,375 votes, surpassing K.R. Periyakaruppan, who serves as the Minister of Co-operatives in the state government.

In its inaugural electoral contest, TVK made an impressive impact by winning a total of 108 seats. In a dramatic shift, the ruling DMK saw its representation decline from 159 to only 74 seats compared to their performance in the 2021 elections. Meanwhile, the AIADMK achieved a total of 47 seats, down from 66 in the previous election cycle.

The DMK faced a significant setback with Chief Minister M K Stalin losing his seat to VS Babu of TVK. Furthermore, the DMK’s influence in Chennai, which has historically been a stronghold, diminished considerably. In 2021, the DMK secured all 16 seats in the city, but this election saw TVK capturing the majority, leaving the DMK with only a few seats.

During its campaign, TVK positioned itself as a centre-left party, drawing inspiration from key figures such as B.R. Ambedkar, Periyar, and Kamaraj, who are known for their contributions to social justice. The party has publicly identified the BJP as its “ideological opponent” and the DMK as its “political adversary,” citing concerns over dynastic politics.

Currently, TVK commands a vote share of about 32 percent, aligning closely with the DMK alliance’s share. This election also recorded the highest voter turnout for an assembly election in Tamil Nadu, with 85.1 percent of eligible voters participating.
