Farage uses a fierce tactic to divert attention from the controversial £5 million donation saga | John Crace

In a familiar maneuver reminiscent of Donald Trump’s strategies, the Reform party appears to be trying to divert attention from recent setbacks. Last week marked a difficult period for the party, as it faced declining support in opinion polls. Additionally, revelations from the Guardian surfaced regarding a £5 million donation received by Nigel Farage from Christopher Harborne, a crypto dealer based in Thailand, which Farage had not disclosed.

This revelation cast a shadow over Farage, who positions himself as a champion of the common people. The optics of receiving such a significant financial boost from acquaintances raises questions about his authenticity. At least he is not accused of defrauding the state through universal credit claims. In the aftermath, Reform has struggled to regain its footing, issuing numerous press releases attempting to clarify the situation, often with conflicting messages.

Farage claimed he had no intentions of entering Parliament when he received the funds, asserting that he only sought financial security for retirement. His decision to run for office came as a coincidence shortly thereafter. The funds were reportedly intended for his security as he sought to return to politics, though they evidently have not sufficed. Since becoming the Member of Parliament for Clacton, he has conducted very few constituency surgeries, citing concerns for his safety.

In an effort to shift the narrative, Farage turned to Zia Yusuf, a figure he refers to as his “shadow home secretary.” Yusuf, who has yet to run for Parliament, has a reputation for provoking controversy. Unlike many of his colleagues in Reform, who seek public approval, Yusuf seems to thrive on being unpopular.

Over the weekend, Yusuf took to social media to unveil a new policy proposal that garnered significant attention. His idea involved constructing detention centers for “illegal immigrants” exclusively in areas that voted for the Green Party, a suggestion that sparked widespread discussion. Surprisingly, Yusuf relished the public’s reaction and began to entertain the notion further, albeit with some concern that it might inadvertently benefit the Green Party in the upcoming local elections.

While pondering the logistics of such detention centers, Yusuf noted that there would be ample space available for construction. He humorously suggested that if Lewisham were to turn Green, they could repurpose entire roads into detention facilities, given that many Green supporters advocate for car-free zones.

However, the plan was not without its challenges. Yusuf contemplated how to incentivize Reform supporters who favored harsher treatment of immigrants, even as he predicted the centers would quickly become unnecessary due to mass deportations. His grasp of practical realities appeared tenuous at best.

Moreover, Yusuf considered how to address Reform voters residing in areas governed by Green councils. His solution entailed a promise that those who photographed their votes for Reform candidates would be taken care of, hinting at potential support for relocation to the UAE, funded by financial savings from tax breaks.

This initiative marked the beginning of what Yusuf envisioned as a bold new future, one where a Reform administration would prioritize the needs of its supporters. This approach, he believed, would significantly reduce welfare expenditures by denying benefits to those who voted for rival parties. Additionally, he proposed that the NHS could be optimized by excluding individuals who did not support Reform from receiving treatment.

Yusuf felt a sense of triumph, believing he had stumbled upon a groundbreaking concept. His party colleagues, including Dicky Tice and Lee Anderson, were sharing his tweets, potentially indicating that his controversial ideas were being taken seriously. Meanwhile, Farage appeared pleased that the £5 million donation had not been a topic of discussion for several days, perhaps allowing the party to draw a veil over the issue.
