Each year, the Indian Premier League (IPL) sees an increase in run-scoring, driven by the use of larger bats, shorter boundaries, and flatter pitches, transforming it into a high-scoring extravaganza. However, the 2026 season has presented a unique scenario, unlike any recent seasons.
Teams have frequently surpassed 200 runs in their first innings, and even more astonishingly, have consistently chased down totals exceeding 200, challenging the traditional notion of what constitutes a ‘good score.’
On Monday, the Lucknow Super Giants faced this reality as they witnessed the Mumbai Indians successfully chase a formidable target of 229 runs with over an over to spare.
When LSG’s coach, Justin Langer, was questioned about the implications of such high-scoring chases on the game and whether the equilibrium between bat and ball needed to be reestablished, he expressed his awe at the current batting performances while recognizing the challenges faced by bowlers.
“As a former batter and a long-time coach, I am astounded by the level of batting on display right now. It is simply breathtaking,” Langer remarked.
“Who could have predicted such high-scoring chases years ago? Players like Nicky Pooran and Rickelton are making an impact, and we haven’t even touched on the younger talents. For instance, Raghuvanshi made his IPL debut today and hit a six. If I had been in that position, I would have been thrilled yet incredibly anxious,” he noted.
“These young players exude confidence, and it’s clearly influencing some of the more experienced members of the team. Ultimately, this trend is beneficial for the sport; it’s entertaining. While it may seem one-sided, it’s important to understand that when batters are performing at this level, bowlers must maintain their composure under pressure. For example, Prince Yadav bowled three overs for 22 runs, but his final over went for 10 runs, demonstrating that even skilled bowlers face significant challenges,” he added during the post-match press conference.
Langer highlighted that the evolving dynamics of the game have necessitated a reevaluation of team strategies, prompting LSG to adjust their batting lineup to keep up with the pace of scoring.
“I believe the restructuring of our batting order was a positive step. We analyzed our performance metrics from last season and recognized that we had fallen behind in our batting this year, which compelled us to take action,” he explained.
“Watching Nicky Pooran play and bring joy to our team is rewarding. His determination is evident. I attend every training session just to see him bat. Despite not having the season he aimed for, his performance today showcased why he is considered one of the top T20 players globally. It was entertaining and a significant positive for our squad,” the former Australian coach stated.
Despite the defeat, Langer expressed confidence in captain Rishabh Pant, asserting that the wicketkeeper-batter is on the verge of regaining his best form.
“Interestingly, just two days ago, we played a practice match here where Rishabh scored around 95 runs off approximately 30 to 40 balls. It was a reminder of his exceptional capability,” Langer said.
“We know he is a top player, having showcased his talent in Test cricket by dominating teams from the number five position. Given his recent performance after a break, we believed it would be beneficial for him to lower his batting order to allow Nicky to play. That was a remarkable decision,” he noted.
“Rishabh is close to finding his rhythm. As a captain and a coach in the IPL, the key is to keep pushing forward. He will continue to step up and, with any luck, help us secure victories in the upcoming matches,” he concluded.
The Lucknow Super Giants will next face the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at home on Thursday.
