Live Coverage: Pentagon Provides Update on Iran Conflict Amid Rising Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz

On Tuesday morning, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine are scheduled to hold a press briefing amid escalating tensions surrounding the ceasefire in the ongoing conflict with Iran. On Monday, U.S. Navy destroyers successfully defended against a concerted attack involving Iranian missiles, drones, and small vessels while escorting two commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Iranian Foreign Minister remarked that the recent hostilities underscore the futility of seeking a military resolution to the conflict. He cautioned that both the United States and its allies should be cautious of being lured back into a complicated situation by adversaries.

According to CBS News, two U.S. Navy destroyers navigated the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, skillfully avoiding a barrage of Iranian drones and missiles. The U.S. Central Command reported that alongside the Navy vessels, two U.S.-flagged commercial ships participated in “Project Freedom,” an initiative launched by President Trump to facilitate maritime movement through the strategic waterway.

The U.S. Central Command confirmed that six Iranian vessels were destroyed on Monday after they attempted to disrupt the passage of the commercial ships being escorted by the Navy, although President Trump later claimed the figure was seven. However, Iran’s state-run news agency IRNA disputed this claim, asserting that none of its “fast boats” were harmed.

In remarks to Fox News, President Trump warned that Iran would face severe consequences if it interfered in the Strait of Hormuz, stating that the country would be “blown off the face of the Earth,” according to reporter Trey Yingst.

Iran has issued threats indicating that U.S. forces would be attacked if they entered the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial chokepoint for global oil trade that has been mostly inaccessible since the war commenced in late February. Additionally, on Monday, Iran launched attacks against targets in the United Arab Emirates, including a tanker associated with the Abu Dhabi state energy corporation.

This ongoing exchange of hostilities poses significant challenges to the fragile ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, which President Trump extended indefinitely last month while negotiations for a more permanent agreement are underway.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on Monday that discussions between the two nations are progressing. However, he warned the U.S. and the UAE to remain vigilant against being drawn back into a complex situation by those with malicious intentions.

President Trump expressed skepticism over Iran’s recent peace proposal during the weekend, suggesting it was unlikely to be accepted as “they have not yet paid a big enough price.”
