Ryan Rickelton praises Rohit Sharma as a unique opening partner: ‘He’s one of a kind’

The Mumbai Indians had not tasted victory since April 20, and their last win at home was recorded on April 29. As losses accumulated, the match against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Monday became critical for their hopes of reaching the playoffs.

The game began unfavorably for MI, as their bowlers allowed a hefty total of 228 runs, setting a daunting target. The crowd at Wankhede Stadium anticipated a commanding performance from Rohit Sharma, but it was Ryan Rickelton who stepped up to lead the charge.

Rickelton, MI’s standout batsman this season, delivered an impressive innings of 83 runs off just 32 balls, propelling his team towards victory and earning the Player of the Match accolade.

In the aftermath of the match, Rickelton shared his thoughts on partnering with Rohit Sharma at the crease. “He’s exceptional,” he remarked. “He’s undoubtedly one of the greatest players in the sport. The advice he shares isn’t always revolutionary; often, it’s insights that resonate from various experiences throughout the game. It’s more about how he handles pressure, maintains his composure, and trusts his abilities while having a profound understanding of his game. It’s always a privilege to bat alongside one of India’s legends, and I hope to continue doing so for a long time.”

Rickelton elaborated on how their batting partnership alleviates pressure. “Absolutely. I mentioned before in an interview that we complement each other quite effectively. At times, he accelerates the innings, relieving pressure from me, and other times, I take the initiative, easing the load on him. That was the case during this match, where I was able to get going quickly. After missing five or six games, he took some time to reacquaint himself with his batting rhythm before putting the pressure on the bowlers. Watching him in full swing is phenomenal; he plays shots that I can only dream of. When he’s on form, it’s a delight, and it certainly lightens my burden.”

Rickelton also acknowledged the challenge of competing for a spot in the lineup with Quinton de Kock available. “It’s been a bit challenging having someone of Quinny’s caliber on the bench at the start of the season. It’s mentally taxing since you might feel extra pressure to perform, knowing a player of his ability is waiting for his chance, and everyone is urging for his selection.”

“However, when he suffered an injury to his hand, I got my opportunity. I have faith in my skills, and I strive to represent this team well. There’s a healthy competition between us, and we are very supportive of one another. In fact, he was the first to tease me about missing out on a century tonight, which I admit is valid. So, yes, he’s been incredibly supportive and has helped me greatly throughout this tournament.”

This victory marked only the Mumbai Indians’ third win in ten matches. They will next compete against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur on Sunday.
