U.S. Military Reports Fatal Strike on Suspected Drug Vessel in Caribbean, Resulting in Two Deaths

Washington — The U.S. military confirmed that it conducted yet another airstrike against a vessel suspected of transporting illegal drugs in the Caribbean Sea, resulting in the deaths of two individuals on Monday.

Since early September, the Trump administration has intensified its campaign targeting alleged drug trafficking boats in Latin American waters, with reports indicating that at least 188 people have lost their lives in these operations. Similar attacks have also occurred in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Despite ongoing tensions related to the conflict in Iran, these military actions have escalated recently, reflecting the administration’s unwavering commitment to combat what it describes as “narcoterrorism” in the Western Hemisphere. However, the military has yet to provide concrete evidence confirming that any of the vessels were, in fact, transporting drugs.

The series of attacks coincided with the U.S. strengthening its military presence in the region, marking the largest buildup in decades. This surge in activity preceded the January operation that led to the capture of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who was subsequently brought to New York to face drug trafficking allegations, which he has denied.

In the most recent strike on Monday, U.S. Southern Command reiterated its previous assertions, stating that the operation targeted individuals believed to be involved in drug smuggling along established routes. The command shared a video on social media depicting a boat traveling in the water before it was engulfed in flames following a significant explosion.

President Trump has characterized the situation as an “armed conflict” with cartels operating in Latin America, defending the airstrikes as a critical measure to curb the influx of drugs into the United States and to address the fatal overdoses that have claimed American lives. Nonetheless, his administration has not provided substantial evidence to validate its claims of targeting “narcoterrorists.”

Critics of the airstrikes have raised concerns regarding the legality of these military actions against the vessels.
