Mike Wells has resigned from his position as head coach of the Adelaide 36ers, just two years after taking over from Scott Ninnis.
The announcement follows the team’s defeat in the final game of the NBL championship series last month, where they were bested by the Sydney Kings.
Wells, who had recently signed a two-year contract extension, expressed that his choice to resign came after considerable contemplation.
“I take great pride in what we have accomplished in Adelaide over the last two years,” he remarked. “The players, staff, and fans have warmly welcomed my family and me.”
“Adelaide holds a special place in my heart, and I am thankful for the chance to be part of the 36ers. However, during my recent time back in Utah with my sons and visiting my aging father, I realized that I have been away from my family for much of the last thirty years. Therefore, stepping down to be with them feels like the right choice.”
Wells assumed the head coach role two years ago after Ninnis was dismissed following a disappointing season. Ninnis had taken over from CJ Bruton, who was also let go due to underwhelming performance.
Grant Kelley, the executive chair of the 36ers, expressed disappointment over Wells’ departure but emphasized support for his decision. “While we would have preferred Mike to continue guiding the program, we completely understand and respect his choice to focus on his family,” Kelley stated.
The Sydney Kings clinched the NBL championship against the 36ers with a thrilling 113-101 overtime victory on Easter Sunday. This marked the Kings’ third championship win in five seasons, while the 36ers have not secured the title since 2002.
The 36ers will begin their search for a new head coach without delay. Following their loss to the Kings, the club had previously dismissed rumors about Wells’ potential departure, despite speculation regarding team dynamics throughout the season.
