The political conflict surrounding prepaid smart meters in Uttar Pradesh escalated on Monday, as Akhilesh Yadav, the president of the Samajwadi Party, asserted that the state government’s decision to reverse its stance demonstrates the influence of public dissent. He cautioned that renewed protests could occur if the demands of consumers remain unaddressed.
In a statement on X, Yadav contended that the “united resistance against the flawed prepaid meter system” compelled the government to reconsider its position. He accused the ruling BJP of artificially increasing electricity charges under the guise of prepaid metering and insisted that the overcharges be “appropriately adjusted” in future bills.
The SP leader warned that should the “excessive billing” not be rectified and the funds “wrongfully taken from the public” not reimbursed, citizens would unite for another significant movement, indicating the potential for widespread protests across the state.
“They must return the money taken from the public in the name of electricity bills. The BJP has to give back this unjust gain to the people,” he stated.
These comments arise amidst an ongoing debate regarding the state’s smart metering initiative, which has incited demonstrations in various districts, with consumers alleging coercive transitions to prepaid systems and a lack of clarity in billing practices. The state government has now announced that prepaid smart meters will not be obligatory for all users.
Yadav also criticized the application of technology in governance, arguing that if innovations like artificial intelligence can be utilized in electoral processes, they should also be employed to address billing inaccuracies.
On the other hand, the state government has defended the use of smart meters, asserting that they are intended to enhance operational efficiency, minimize losses, and ensure precise billing.
