Allahabad High Court Initiates Comprehensive Investigation into Government Physicians’ Private Medical Practices Amid Concerns of Parallel Healthcare Sector

The Allahabad High Court has taken a firm stance regarding the operations of Moti Lal Nehru Medical College and its associated Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital, expressing serious concerns about government doctors participating in private medical practices and effectively establishing a separate medical system in Prayagraj.

Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal has mandated the Uttar Pradesh government to initiate a thorough investigation into the conduct of physicians at Moti Lal Nehru Medical College who are allegedly involved in private practice. The court’s order, issued on May 4, highlighted that many faculty members, including Professors, Associate Professors, and Lecturers, are operating in private nursing homes, thereby creating a parallel healthcare industry in the area. The court pointed out that these doctors are performing surgeries and keeping patients in private facilities after they have been transferred from the Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital.

In its directive, the court stated, “This issue should be escalated to the Chief Secretary of the Government of Uttar Pradesh in Lucknow, who is responsible for taking necessary actions against those violating regulations and for establishing a high-level inquiry into the private practices of doctors at Moti Lal Nehru Medical College.”

During prior court sessions, on April 20, the court was informed about the poor condition of the hostels for both male and female students at Moti Lal Nehru Medical College, citing neglect by the medical administration. Documentation presented included images showing that undergraduate and postgraduate students were residing in unsuitable conditions.

The court noted that the proper functioning of a hospital relies heavily on providing suitable accommodation for its medical staff, and the current state of the hostels was deemed unacceptable. In light of this situation, the Allahabad High Court instructed the principal to submit a comprehensive response detailing the conditions of both undergraduate and postgraduate hostels, along with an affidavit concerning the status of the cardiology department.
