Claire Mazumdar poised to steer Biocon towards a new phase of expansion.

Claire Mazumdar is set to take the reins of Biocon Ltd, succeeding Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, and is recognized for her impressive blend of scientific expertise, leadership in the global biotech arena, and entrepreneurial achievements. Her appointment marks a significant new phase for the Bengaluru-based biotech company.

At just 37 years old, Claire has made a name for herself as the CEO of Bicara Therapeutics, a Boston-based biotech company that received financial backing from Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and made its debut on the Nasdaq in 2024.

Claire is the daughter of Ravi Mazumdar, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw’s brother, and she will lead Biocon, which operates in over 120 countries, supported by seven manufacturing facilities, three research and development sites, 18 global offices, and a workforce exceeding 9,500 individuals.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, who now serves as Chairperson of Biocon, stated that this transition forms part of a planned five-year strategy for the company, which boasts a market capitalization of ₹61,700 crore.

Following the death of her husband, John Shaw, in 2022, Kiran has no children. Claire holds a Bachelor of Science in Biological Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business, and a Ph.D. in cancer biology from Stanford School of Medicine. Her research in tumor immunology and cancer epigenetics has been featured in esteemed journals, including Nature, Cell Stem Cell, and Cancer Cell.

Bicara Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing innovative bifunctional therapies for patients with solid tumors. The company has established a platform aimed at creating therapies that accurately target tumors and deliver therapeutic agents directly to the tumor site.

Claire’s diverse career includes leadership roles in business development and corporate strategy at Rheos Medicines, where she played a key role in forming a significant partnership with Roche. During her time as a Senior Associate at Third Rock Ventures, she concentrated on company formation and aided in business development for various TRV portfolio companies. Additionally, she serves on the Board of Directors for Noora Health, a global nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing patient outcomes and strengthening health systems by empowering family caregivers with essential skills.

Industry experts believe that Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has made an excellent choice in selecting Claire as her successor at the Indian biotech firm.

Ravi Mazumdar, Kiran’s brother, also holds a position on the board of Biocon. The company has successfully commercialized 12 biosimilar products and over 30 generic formulations worldwide. Biocon’s research and development pipeline includes more than 20 biosimilar assets, alongside GLP-1 peptides and other complex generics. For the fiscal year ending March 2025, Biocon reported revenues of ₹2,242 crore and a net profit of ₹609 crore.
