As part of an extensive effort to modernize law enforcement, the Delhi Police is launching an innovative initiative that will see senior officers, specifically those holding the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) or higher, taking responsibility for 100 police stations. Each officer will have at least ten years of service and will spearhead focused reforms within their designated stations.
The initiative’s core component involves the use of artificial intelligence for predictive policing, which aims to pinpoint areas with high crime rates and facilitate more efficient deployment of law enforcement personnel, as stated by officials to The Indian Express. This directive was originally presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a gathering of police directors and inspectors general the previous year, and the project is now gaining traction with the assignment of police stations to senior officers.
This program will also emphasize the tracking of missing children, enhancing responses to cybercrime, and addressing operational shortcomings within police stations to boost efficiency at the community level.
A senior officer highlighted that the initiative will be supported by a wider network of CCTV cameras equipped with facial recognition technology in public areas. Additionally, there will be improved integration of databases such as the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) and ‘Crime Kundali,’ allowing officers real-time access to criminal histories.
Furthermore, the Delhi Police plans to enhance surveillance capabilities during large events, protests, and emergencies through the deployment of drones. Body-worn cameras are also being introduced to increase transparency and assist in evidence collection. Performance dashboards will be installed in police stations to monitor response times and operational effectiveness.
However, technological upgrades are only part of the initiative. There is also a concerted effort to enhance community policing. Local committees and resident welfare organizations will be more actively involved, and police stations will hold regular meetings with the public. Mobile applications designed for citizens will be promoted to simplify the reporting of crimes and grievances, while educational campaigns will address the growing threat of online scams and digital fraud.
The police emphasize that this initiative aims to improve crime control at the local level. Integrated patrolling and group monitoring are expected to increase visibility on the streets, while efforts will be directed at tracking repeat offenders. The focus will also include locating missing children and stolen electronics, as well as expediting investigations related to crimes against women and children. The expansion of women help desks and all-female patrol teams is also a part of this comprehensive plan.
Recognizing the evolving nature of crime, the Delhi Police is investing in training programs for its personnel. Officers will receive education in cybercrime, financial fraud, and digital forensics, as well as specialized training in counter-terrorism and intelligence operations. Leadership and ethics training will also be prioritized to enhance professionalism within the force.
The initiative calls for closer collaboration with national agencies, with police stations expected to work alongside the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) on digital offenses. Partnerships with organizations like the National Commission for Women will aim to improve victim support systems, and better coordination with central agencies such as the CBI and NIA is planned.
In terms of infrastructure, there are plans to convert police stations into smart facilities featuring digital records and citizen service centers. Mobility improvements will include GPS-enabled patrol vehicles and rapid response motorcycles, while integrated command centers will assist with disaster management and counter-terrorism operations.
Moreover, addressing corruption is a priority, with senior officers tasked with closely overseeing operations at the station level to enhance accountability.
Officers describe this initiative as a fusion of technology, accountability, and public trust, marking a shift from traditional reactive policing to a proactive, data-informed, and community-focused approach. If executed successfully, the model established at these police stations could serve as a framework for broader policing reforms across the capital.
