Demonstrations and the Ongoing Battle Against Antisemitism in the UK | Correspondence

In light of the recent violence against Jews in Golders Green, there has been a call to consider banning pro-Palestinian protests. However, I believe this approach is misguided. As a Jewish resident of north London, I currently feel unsafe in my community, but I do not attribute that to the pro-Palestinian demonstrations; rather, I hold the Israeli government accountable for its actions.

The rise in antisemitism is concerning and must be addressed, but blaming protests for this societal issue distracts from the real source of fear. The actions of the Israeli government—including military operations in Gaza, actions against Iran, and involvement in Lebanon—are, in my view, tantamount to crimes against humanity. These policies not only endanger Jewish individuals but also generate global backlash, complicating the distinction between Jewish identity and government actions many of us oppose.

Prohibiting protests will not eliminate antisemitism. Such measures would undermine democratic principles and stifle dissenting voices, including those of Jews like myself who advocate for peace and social justice while opposing the Israeli government’s policies. If our government is genuinely concerned about our safety, it should prioritize effective strategies such as combating hate crimes, enhancing community security, and promoting inter-community dialogue. True safety will not come from banning protests, but rather from openly confronting hatred while upholding the freedoms that protect all individuals.

Jonathan Freedland’s commentary on banning pro-Palestinian demonstrations and mentioning a “Jewish bloc” at these events fails to recognize the diversity within the Jewish community. As a participant in several pro-Palestinian marches, I take pride in standing against antisemitism in the UK. Despite claims by some Israeli leaders that their actions receive universal Jewish backing, many of us uphold the fundamental Jewish values of altruism, truth, justice, and peace, as noted by historian Avi Shlaim.

Jewish involvement in pro-Palestinian protests serves to demonstrate that not all Jews endorse state violence, and it helps to correct the misconception that discontent with Israeli policies equates to animosity toward British Jews.

As a long-time supporter of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, I find the rise in antisemitic incidents alarming, especially in light of Israel’s military actions in Gaza. It is crucial to clarify that the Jewish community is distinct from the Israeli government and should not be held accountable for its actions. Misunderstandings may lead some to conflate these two entities, which only exacerbates the issue.

Moreover, blaming pro-Palestinian marches for antisemitic attacks does a disservice to the fight against hatred. Such accusations imply that opposing Israel’s policies is inherently threatening to Jews. We can simultaneously oppose Israeli actions and antisemitism without conflating the two.

Dave Rich accurately points out that extremist violence arises from a broader context of language and ideas that demonize certain groups, and mere expressions of sympathy are insufficient. However, there is a lack of operational analysis in understanding how threats are identified and managed. Cases like Essa Suleiman highlight how fragmented systems fail to connect critical information about individuals with known violent tendencies.

Sir Adrian Fulford’s findings in the Southport inquiry echo this need for a comprehensive, systemic response to incitement. A holistic approach must be adopted to ensure that we effectively identify and address those at risk of committing violence. This challenge is not merely technological; it requires a reevaluation of legal and regulatory frameworks governing information sharing and case management. Without these changes, the cycle of violence will persist.
