On Wednesday, the FBI conducted a search of the office of Virginia state Senator L. Louise Lucas in Portsmouth, Virginia, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the bureau to CBS News.
Lucas played a significant role in advancing a new congressional map through the Virginia legislature, which is expected to create four additional seats that favor the Democratic Party. Although this map received approval through a ballot referendum in April, its implementation is currently suspended while the Virginia Supreme Court reviews its legality.
The FBI representative indicated that the investigation is still in progress, assuring that there is no immediate threat to public safety.
In addition to searching Lucas’s office, federal agents also examined a cannabis dispensary that she co-owns, according to the spokesperson.
The specific focus of the investigation remains unclear, and details regarding the law enforcement activities authorized by the court have not been disclosed.
This law enforcement action was initially reported by Fox News. In a statement to the outlet, Lucas expressed confusion regarding the presence of FBI agents in her office.
Efforts by CBS News to obtain comments from Lucas were met with silence, as her office did not respond to requests for information.
At 82 years old, Lucas has been a member of the Virginia General Assembly since 1991 and currently holds the position of Senate president pro tempore. Earlier this year, she actively promoted the Democratic redistricting initiative and engaged in public exchanges on social media, challenging Republicans, former President Trump, and even her fellow Democratic senators from Virginia.
After the passage of the redistricting measure, she took to social media to express her sentiments, stating, “You all started it and we f***ing finished it,” in reference to Trump’s efforts to alter Texas’s congressional map, which sparked the ongoing redistricting conflict between the two political parties.
