In a remarkable turnaround, Talia Gibson has advanced to the second round of the Italian Open in Rome after overcoming a challenging match. The Australian tennis player, who had faced a string of eight consecutive defeats, found herself trailing 2-0 in the final set against Italian wild card Martina Trevisan. However, she managed to rally back and secure a victory with scores of 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 in just over two hours.
Gibson’s recent performances have seen her rise 50 spots in the rankings, from 112 two months ago, following impressive results at Indian Wells and Miami. Despite struggling to find her rhythm on clay courts this season, she showed resilience during her debut match in Rome against Trevisan, whose current ranking of 516 does not reflect her former status as world number 18, which she held three years ago before injuries impacted her career.
On a chilly day in the Italian capital and in front of a sparse audience, Gibson had a rough patch in the second set, losing it in just 33 minutes and facing an early break. Nevertheless, she clinched the final four games to claim the match.
Next, Gibson will go up against Russian 19th seed Diana Shnaider, who previously defeated her in three sets during their encounter at the Australian Open earlier this year.
In addition, two other Australian players are set to compete in Rome. Ajla Tomljanovic, ranked 88th in the world, will face local wildcard Noemi Basiletti, who is currently ranked 357. Meanwhile, Daria Kasatkina has a more challenging match ahead against American Caty McNally, who holds a higher ranking at 52. The winner of that match will face three-time Rome champion Iga Swiatek, the tournament’s fourth seed.
Australia’s top-ranked player, Maya Joint, who is seeded 29th, has received a bye into the second round.
On the opening day of the main draw, Barbora Krejcikova won against Elsa Jacquemot with a score of 6-2, 6-4, earning her a match against world number one Aryna Sabalenka. Additionally, Anastasia Zakharova triumphed over Dayana Yastremska after saving five match points, finishing with scores of 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8/6), while Bianca Andreescu and Qinwen Zheng were among the other players to advance in the tournament.
