Ludhiana has become the third city in Punjab to adopt the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), following Jalandhar and Mohali, as announced by Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP), Gaurav Yadav, during the inauguration of the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) on Tuesday.
According to Yadav, the ICCC project has involved the installation of 1,700 high-resolution cameras at 259 different sites to enhance the city’s surveillance capabilities.
The ITMS, which is currently operational at 46 locations throughout the city, is designed to identify up to nine types of traffic infractions. These include violations such as running a red light, failing to stop at the designated line, riding without a helmet, carrying a passenger without a helmet, riding with more than two people, speeding, violating zebra crossings, driving on the wrong side of the road, and improper parking.
By integrating various units including Traffic, Police Control Room (PCR), Safe City initiatives, District Control Rooms, and Wireless units, the ICCC is equipped to provide rapid responses to emergencies.
Key features of this technological advancement include AI-driven enforcement, as highlighted by the Ludhiana Police. The ITMS has been activated across 46 locations, enabling automatic detection of nine distinct traffic offenses. Additionally, a dedicated Green Corridor has been established to facilitate the swift movement of organ transplant teams and emergency vehicles. The system also enhances surveillance capabilities with an advanced vehicle tracking feature, significantly improving the department’s efficiency in identifying and intercepting suspicious vehicles in real-time.
During his visit to Ludhiana, Yadav described the newly launched ICCC as a significant advancement in preventive policing. He emphasized that the upgraded facility brings together multiple units under one roof, thereby improving coordination and reducing PCR response times from 15 minutes to approximately 7 to 8 minutes.
In a press briefing, DGP Yadav urged young people not to fall prey to the allure of gangsters operating from abroad. He affirmed that the Punjab Police maintains a strict stance against organized crime and is committed to apprehending criminals, regardless of their location. “I strongly encourage the youth to resist the temptations presented by these criminals. Focus on your education and career, as 80-90% of extortion and threat calls turn out to be fraudulent. I urge the public to report any such incidents, as we take all complaints seriously and will register FIRs accordingly,” he stated.
Additionally, Yadav participated in a communal meal, known as ‘Bada Khaana,’ at the Police Lines, where he dined with over 550 personnel from various ranks of the Punjab Police. He remarked, “Such gatherings foster camaraderie, unity, and our shared dedication to serving the community.”
