“One Year Later: Friedrich Merz Faces Challenges in Regaining His Political Balance”

Friedrich Merz’s initial tenure as Chancellor of Germany has been marked by significant challenges, and a year after assuming office, he continues to grapple with low public support and the growing influence of far-right factions. Taking office on May 6, 2025, following a disappointing first-round parliamentary vote, doubts about the stability of his coalition with the Social Democrats emerged almost immediately.

The formal election of the chancellor typically follows a general election and is expected to be a straightforward process, with lawmakers approving the candidate chosen by the new government. However, the identity of 18 dissenting lawmakers who withheld their support in a secret ballot remains unknown, setting a tumultuous tone for Merz’s administration, which has faced numerous crises, mistakes, and a lack of trust.

Daniel Goffart, a biographer of Merz, recently described the government as “stuck in the mud,” reflecting a broader sentiment of strategic paralysis amid escalating domestic and international issues. A recent poll conducted by the US-based research firm Morning Consult revealed that Merz holds the second-lowest approval rating among 24 democratically elected leaders globally, with only 19% of Germans expressing satisfaction with his performance.

Some of Merz’s senior advisors argue that his unpopularity is disproportionate given the complexities he has encountered, including navigating relationships with a sometimes-hostile Donald Trump, addressing deindustrialization in vital sectors, and managing rising fuel prices linked to the ongoing conflict in Iran. They attribute the negative public narrative to unfavorable media coverage, while highlighting achievements such as a significant reduction in new asylum applications, increased investments in defense and infrastructure, and efforts to resolve chronic shortages within the military amid the Russian threat.

Critics, however, point to ongoing rivalries and tensions within the coalition, alongside Merz’s occasionally erratic communication style, as detrimental to fostering a unified response to Germany’s pressing challenges. His remarks, often intended to distinguish himself from the more cautious approaches of his predecessors, have sometimes sparked controversy or concern.

Recently, Merz surprised many by delivering a candid critique of the US-led war in Iran to a group of students, which escalated into a diplomatic spat with the White House. This led to President Trump announcing a reduction of at least 5,000 US troops stationed in Germany and imposing new trade sanctions on European automobiles.

Public confidence in the coalition’s ability to stimulate the ailing economy, support the beleaguered automotive industry facing tariffs from Trump and competition from China, and reform a social welfare system grappling with demographic challenges is waning. Political commentator Nils Minkmar likened the situation to a struggling whale, Timmy, highlighting a sense of national despair and the futile efforts to revive it. He criticized the government for its perceived ineptitude in addressing the situation, suggesting that some in Merz’s party are attempting to return to an idealized past through small, ineffective measures.

Johannes Hillje, a political consultant, pointed out that Merz’s lack of prior leadership experience has revealed significant gaps in his skills, while his earlier promises of a swift economic recovery have not materialized. He noted that Merz’s shortcomings in communication and management, combined with the nation’s structural crises, have intensified the difficulties of governance. Hillje emphasized the necessity of building public trust and offering a compelling vision that extends beyond immediate reforms, suggesting that Merz needs to enhance his communication with more clarity and empathy.

Despite the ongoing difficulties, Goffart dismissed the notion of impending doom for the government, even in light of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland party, which is gaining traction in various polls but remains kept at bay by a “firewall” established by mainstream parties. He observed that, in spite of frequent conflicts, the ruling coalition appears committed to enduring these challenging times together.
