“South Australian Premier Declares No Obligation to LIV Amid Uncertain Future for Golf League in Adelaide”

Concerns are growing regarding the future of the LIV Golf tournament following the withdrawal of financial support from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas has stated that his focus is on the potential benefits of LIV Golf for the state, rather than the ongoing controversies surrounding the competition on a global scale.

Efforts are currently underway to redevelop the North Adelaide golf course, a project that has stirred significant debate.

As LIV Golf seeks alternative funding sources after the exit of Saudi Arabia’s PIF, Premier Malinauskas indicated that the state would welcome the tour back to Adelaide. However, he emphasized that the government would not invest in anything that fails to yield results.

The prospects for LIV Golf’s annual Adelaide event and the $45 million redevelopment of the North Adelaide public golf course have been uncertain for several weeks, especially after it was announced that the PIF would be retracting its substantial financial support for the league.

In his first remarks following the funding withdrawal, LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil revealed that he is in the process of developing a new business strategy that includes seeking investors from outside the organization. He mentioned receiving interest from various parties, including private equity firms and wealthy individuals who typically invest in sports.

“We need our media partners to remain committed to us. We are broadcast in over 200 countries, and it’s crucial that those 40 partners continue their support,” he noted.

O’Neil assured that LIV Golf’s marketing partners are still on board but acknowledged that it is still early in the planning stages.

Meanwhile, Premier Malinauskas stated that the financial troubles faced by LIV Golf are their responsibility. He expressed confidence in the success of the event held in Adelaide, which he characterized as a significant benefit to the state.

“What matters is that we receive value for our investment, and there is no doubt that the event has been a tremendous success for South Australia,” he remarked. “We will not finance anything that does not deliver, so the onus is on them.”

O’Neil has indicated that LIV Golf is exploring various business models, and Malinauskas welcomed this initiative, suggesting that the government would be willing to consider proposals that prove beneficial for the state.

“I have no obligation to LIV Golf. My primary responsibility is to the people of South Australia, and I will make decisions that serve the best interests of our state,” he affirmed.

In addition, LIV Golf’s involvement has prompted the state government to proceed with a controversial $45 million redevelopment of the North Adelaide public golf course, aimed at hosting LIV Golf in 2028. Despite facing political backlash over plans to remove 585 trees and uncertainty surrounding LIV’s future, work on the project began last week and continues.

“The plans remain unchanged, and I currently see no reason to alter them,” Malinauskas stated when asked about the potential for pausing the redevelopment.

Greens MLC Robert Simms, a vocal opponent of the redevelopment, introduced a motion in the upper house today, urging the government to halt the project.

“How can the Labor government justify spending $45 million and cutting down over 500 trees for a tournament that may not even take place?” he questioned, stating he would push for a vote on the motion in the upcoming sitting week starting May 19.

Labor holds a slim majority in the upper house, and the motion could pass if it garners support from the Liberals, Greens, and One Nation. However, One Nation leader Cory Bernardi has indicated that his party is unlikely to support the motion, saying, “While I don’t typically favor many of the Greens’ initiatives, we will assess it based on its merits.”
