TMC Council Member Detained Following Bullet Discovery at Kolkata Airport Months Earlier

Almost a year after being caught with unauthorized ammunition at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, a Trinamool Congress councillor from the Pujali municipality in South 24 Parganas has been apprehended by law enforcement.

Amirul Sekh Islam, who serves as the councillor for ward 14, was arrested on Tuesday under the Arms Act, according to police reports.

On September 21, 2025, Islam was intercepted by CISF Sub-Inspector Gopal Shaw while attempting to board flight 6E 5227. Security equipment detected an empty magazine along with six live 7.65 MM cartridges in his luggage.

When confronted, Islam claimed to have a valid firearms license but asked for time to present the necessary documentation. Considering his position as a public official in the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, authorities granted him an initial seven-day extension to furnish proof of legality.

A police spokesperson stated, “The individual was found with live ammunition without the required license or legitimate documents. Although he was initially allowed a seven-day period to submit the necessary paperwork due to his role as a public representative, he failed to do so. As a result, a formal complaint was filed, and a case was registered under the Arms Act, leading to his arrest.”

Law enforcement officials confirmed that the councillor has been charged under the Arms Act for the unlawful possession of live ammunition.
