Ube coffee has rapidly emerged as a significant café trend this year, capturing attention across social media platforms with its vibrant purple lattes and glossy iced versions. Originating from Filipino cuisine, ube, or purple yam, is a naturally sweet root vegetable celebrated for its striking violet hue, rich flavor, and creamy consistency.

Traditionally, ube has been incorporated into various desserts such as cakes, ice cream, and halaya. Now, it has transitioned into the coffee scene, transforming standard lattes into visually appealing purple beverages that are as photogenic as they are delicious.

However, the question arises: is ube coffee genuinely beneficial for health, or is it merely a passing trend fueled by social media buzz? Dietician Dt. Komal Malik from Asian Hospital states, “Ube is a source of fiber and antioxidants, which can contribute positively to digestion and overall wellness. But much of the current excitement is largely influenced by its striking color and extensive social media marketing.”

It’s important to note that while ube does possess certain nutritional benefits, it should not be regarded as a miracle food. “In moderation, ube can enhance nutrition, but it’s not a magical ingredient. So, while it has some health merits, it is primarily a trend right now,” she clarifies.

When comparing ube coffee to standard flavored coffee, Dt. Malik suggests, “If prepared simply, ube coffee can be a healthier alternative. Authentic ube does offer fiber and antioxidants, which is definitely advantageous.”

However, the health benefits can diminish when cafés transform ube coffee into dessert-like concoctions. “Many café-style ube coffees contain added sugars, syrups, and cream. If these components are excessive, they may not be significantly healthier than regular flavored coffee. The healthfulness really hinges on the preparation method,” she explains.

For individuals with diabetes, there is a common misconception that ube is automatically a safe choice due to its natural sweetness. Dt. Malik emphasizes that the overall composition of the drink matters. “It’s wise to consume ube coffee in moderation. The inclusion of sugar, cream, and milk can quickly escalate calorie counts and elevate blood sugar levels.”

For those managing diabetes or monitoring their weight, both ingredient quality and portion size are crucial. “Opting for a low-sugar version is advisable, and moderation is key. Portion control is very significant,” she advises.

A frequent comparison in wellness cafés is between ube coffee and matcha coffee. Dt. Malik indicates that matcha generally has a nutritional edge. “Matcha is often the better option due to its scientifically backed benefits. It is rich in antioxidants and may aid in metabolism,” she notes.

While ube does provide some health benefits, they are relatively basic. “Ube contains fiber and some antioxidants, yet its health advantages are not as pronounced as those of matcha. In direct comparison, matcha is slightly more beneficial,” she concludes.
