The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) has introduced a pioneering health screening and referral program aimed at former players of the NRL, NRLW, Kangaroos, and Jillaroos.
This initiative will feature consultations and assessments conducted by NRL medical professionals, along with a detailed questionnaire, medical examinations, and a session with a neuropsychologist for cognitive assessments. A specialized medical coordinator will assist participants throughout the process and liaise with their primary healthcare provider.
ARLC chairman Peter V’landys remarked, “For the first time, the league is offering a thorough medical service to all players who have retired from professional play.” He emphasized the importance of extending healthcare beyond active playing years, stating, “While on the field, players benefit from top-tier medical support, and we aim to maintain that level of care after they retire, ensuring they can enjoy a quality life similar to others.” V’landys further highlighted the significance of the health of those who have contributed significantly to the sport, asserting, “The well-being and safety of players is a fundamental focus for the Commission, and I urge all former players to utilize this service.”
Former player James Graham, who collaborated with the ARLC on this initiative along with Mark Carroll, expressed that it would deliver essential support to all ex-players. “This is a transformative development. Every elite athlete will now have access to professional guidance and comprehensive health evaluations,” Graham remarked. “It represents a significant advancement for the sport, ensuring that players receive the care they need post-retirement.”
