A political correspondent has reported that the government should consider funding free public transportation as a response to its involvement in the conflict in Iran.
Yesterday, the federal government unveiled a $10 billion initiative as part of the Australian Fuel Security and Resilience package, which allocates $3.2 billion towards establishing a government-operated Australian Fuel Security Reserve.
During an interview on ABC Radio National Breakfast, the leader of the Greens expressed her confusion regarding Labor’s failure to implement free public transport. “Our government was the first to support this illegal war, and thus it has a responsibility to assist citizens during the ongoing fuel crisis,” Waters stated. She suggested that the government could use funding to make public transport free temporarily, which would alleviate the burden on residents facing rising living costs and help preserve fuel supplies for those in urgent need.
In another development, former Prime Minister Tony Abbott is being considered for the role of president of the Liberal Party, which is currently striving to regain the trust of disenchanted voters. Abbott is anticipated to express interest in leading the party’s organizational wing, a position that is voluntary, with the endorsement of Opposition Leader Peter Dutton.
Abbott and Dutton are known to be long-time allies, and supporters within the Liberal Party believe that Abbott could facilitate constitutional changes within the party’s often-criticized New South Wales branches ahead of candidate selections for the 2028 election. Advocates of Abbott’s potential leadership feel he could revitalize the party as it aims to win back voters who have shifted their allegiance to One Nation in recent months. However, some party members are apprehensive that Abbott’s conservative stance might alienate voters who have gravitated towards teal independents in the last two elections.
According to a Liberal source, the current president is expected to resign from the position prior to a vote to elect a successor later this month.
