In a thrilling match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Pat Cummins, the captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad, was named the player of the match, while Cooper Connolly of the Punjab Kings made headlines by becoming one of the select few to score a century in the IPL, albeit in a losing effort.
Punjab Kings’ coach Ricky Ponting observed with dissatisfaction as his team squandered numerous opportunities, allowing the Sunrisers to surpass them in the standings following a decisive 33-run victory.
Cummins delivered an outstanding performance, claiming two crucial wickets (2-34), making two challenging catches, and executing strategic decisions that contributed to the win. His only setback was losing the toss; however, he was pleased to see his team post an impressive score of 4-235 after being put in to bat. Travis Head contributed significantly with a rapid 38 runs from just 19 balls, and Abhishek Sharma added 35 runs off 13 deliveries.
The Punjab Kings’ fielding woes were evident, as they let four critical chances slip away, including three catches and one stumping. Connolly himself missed a straightforward catch on the boundary off Lockie Ferguson when Ishan Kishan had only scored 9 runs, and Heinrich Klaasen was also dropped for the same score by Shashank Singh off spinner Yuzvendra Chahal.
These missed opportunities proved costly, as Kishan went on to score 55 runs from 32 balls, while Klaasen played a remarkable innings, scoring 69 runs off 43 balls.
Cummins demonstrated exemplary bowling skills, cleverly trapping Priyansh Arya in his first over and successfully taking two difficult catches under the stadium lights as the Kings found themselves struggling at 3-23.
The match’s outcome seemed almost certain once Marcus Stoinis was dismissed for a quick 28 runs off 14 balls, and Cummins (2-34) struck again to dismiss Suryansh Shedge, quelling any potential comeback from the Kings.
Despite the loss, Connolly provided a display of resilience, hitting eight sixes and seven fours to become Australia’s 12th centurion in IPL history. He achieved his maiden century in just 57 balls, finishing with an impressive 107 not out as the Kings ended their innings at 7-202.
