In a recent Instagram post, Dr. Nene emphasized the importance of proactive measures, stating, “Beat the heat before it beats you.” He noted that alarming statistics reveal a significant number of individuals are receiving treatment for dehydration and fatigue, conditions that are largely preventable.

Dr. Nene highlighted that our bodies often communicate their hydration needs before we consciously recognize them, urging people to be attentive to these signals. He compiled a detailed guide for managing the extreme heat, covering hydration strategies and dietary recommendations.

According to his advice, waiting until you feel thirsty indicates you’re already at a disadvantage. Key strategies include the application of sunscreen, maintaining hydration, and adhering to a proper diet, with a particular emphasis on consuming 3-4 liters of water daily.

Dr. Basavaraj S Kumbar, a Consultant in Internal Medicine at Aster Whitefield Hospital in Bengaluru, supports Dr. Nene’s recommendations. He advises drinking 8-10 glasses of water daily, carrying a water bottle at all times, and enhancing plain water with lemon, cucumber, or mint for added flavor. He also suggested starting the day with a glass of water to boost hydration and metabolism.

Dr. Kumbar cautioned against excessive consumption of coffee, energy drinks, and sodas, recommending alternatives like coconut water, herbal tea, or lemon water. He explained that high caffeine and sugar intake can lead to dehydration, fatigue, and bloating, which may leave individuals feeling drained.

In his suggestions, Dr. Kumbar also encouraged individuals to seek shade and avoid direct sunlight between noon and 4 p.m. He stressed the importance of wearing protective clothing and applying sunscreen to guard against the effects of heat and dehydration.

To assist with hydration, Dr. Kumbar proposed utilizing hydration reminders or apps and adhering to the 8×8 rule—drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day. He recommended sipping water throughout the day rather than consuming large quantities at once.

Incorporating water-rich foods such as watermelon, cucumber, oranges, and strawberries into one’s diet is also beneficial, along with soups, smoothies, and fresh juices. These foods not only aid hydration but also provide vital vitamins and minerals that help cool the body, he said.

For a refreshing twist, Dr. Kumbar suggested opting for coconut water, rich in electrolytes, or herbal teas like chamomile or green tea, which are packed with antioxidants. He also mentioned that infusing water with fruits, mint, or cucumber can enhance its taste and nutritional value. Buttermilk and fruit juices are excellent options for staying hydrated and refreshed in the heat.
