James Holder, a co-founder of the clothing brand Superdry, has received an eight-year prison sentence after being convicted of raping a woman following a night out in Cheltenham.
The 54-year-old, who resides in Cheltenham, was supposed to return home to the Cotswolds with a male companion. Instead, they entered the victim’s taxi and proceeded to her apartment in Gloucestershire, where Holder committed the assault.
During the trial, the jury was informed that the victim had pleaded with Holder to stop, but he ignored her requests even as she began to cry. The court noted that her level of intoxication rendered her more vulnerable during the incident.
Although Holder acknowledged that sexual activity occurred in May 2022, he contended that it was consensual. The victim delivered a powerful statement in court, expressing that Holder acted with a sense of entitlement.
She stated, “You chose to take what was never yours – my choice, my dignity, my body. It has been four years since you raped me, and I have not softened that word to make it easier for you or anyone else to hear.”
Further, she reflected on the lasting impact of the assault, saying, “I am still here, still standing, still reclaiming every part of myself you tried to take. The burden of what occurred should be yours, not mine. What you did to me did not conclude that day.”
The victim continued, explaining how the trauma affected her personal relationships and self-worth, stating, “You took advantage of my vulnerability. You entered my home uninvited and disregarded my repeated pleas to stop, behaving as though you had the right to continue your assault.”
At Gloucester Crown Court, located in Cirencester, the jury found Holder guilty of rape the previous week. Recorder David Chidgey rejected Holder’s request for bail so he could arrange his affairs and say goodbye to his family, citing concerns that Holder was a potential flight risk due to his substantial financial resources.
Holder, who once studied graphic design, initially established the skateboarding and BMX fashion label Bench. He co-founded Superdry in 2003 with entrepreneur Julian Dunkerton, starting from a market stall in Cheltenham. The brand opened its first physical store in Covent Garden, London, in 2004 and has since expanded globally, with over 60 locations in the UK alone.
Superdry has stated that Holder had no involvement with the company at the time of the incident.
