The Karnataka state government officially lifted the suspension of senior IPS officer K Ramachandra Rao on Wednesday, just weeks ahead of his retirement. Rao, a DGP-level officer, had been suspended since January following the emergence of a video on social media that allegedly depicted him in a compromising situation with women in his office.
On Wednesday evening, the government released a formal order reinstating Rao. The notification stated, “The Government of Karnataka, utilizing the authority granted under Rule-3(7)(c) of the AIS (Discipline & Appeal) Rules, 1969, hereby revokes the suspension order and reinstates Dr. K Ramachandra Rao, IPS (KN: 1993), into active service effective immediately. He is to be assigned as Director General of Police (Police Manual) until further notice.”
K Ramachandra Rao is set to retire on May 30 of this year. His suspension was enacted in January while he served as the DGP of the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement (DCRE) following the viral video that allegedly showed him involved in inappropriate physical contact with a woman during his tenure as Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the Northern Range in 2017.
Disciplinary proceedings against Rao commenced on March 18 under the All India Service (Discipline and Appeal) regulations.
In 2025, Rao found himself at the center of another controversy when his stepdaughter, Kannada actress Ranya Rao, was implicated in a gold smuggling scheme. Rao was placed on mandatory leave amid accusations that he had permitted her to evade security protocols at the airport. He was subsequently recalled and reinstated as DGP in August.
