Golden Tempo, the victor of the Kentucky Derby, will not participate in the upcoming Preakness Stakes, effectively ending his pursuit of the Triple Crown, as announced by his trainer’s stable on Wednesday.

“Golden provided us with an unforgettable experience during the Kentucky Derby, and we feel that allowing him additional time to recover after such an impressive performance is the best course of action,” the statement from trainer Cherie DeVaux’s stable shared on social media read. “Our primary concern will always be his health, well-being, and long-term prospects.”

The last horse to clinch the Triple Crown—a series that includes the Derby, the Preakness in Maryland, and the Belmont Stakes in New York—was in 2018.
