Defending champions Paris St Germain managed to secure a 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich, advancing to the Champions League final with a 6-5 win on aggregate after a tense second leg that contrasted sharply with their high-scoring first match.
The French team is set to face Arsenal in the championship match scheduled for May 30 in Budapest, following the London club’s narrow 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid which resulted in a 2-1 aggregate triumph.
Bayern Munich aimed to reach their first Champions League final since 2020, but their hopes for a treble were thwarted, leaving them with only the German Cup and their Bundesliga title to compete for this season.
After holding a 5-4 lead from the thrilling first leg, PSG began the match strongly when Ousmane Dembele, who netted twice previously, scored in the third minute, converting a well-placed cutback from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Both players had also previously scored two goals in the first leg.
Bayern quickly responded with increased pressure, coming close to scoring as both Michael Olise and Luis Diaz narrowly missed the target from outside the penalty area.
Despite being contained in their own half, PSG’s goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made a crucial save in the 33rd minute, deflecting Joao Neves’ header to keep Bayern in contention.
PSG’s keeper Matvei Safonov matched Neuer’s heroics with an exceptional save, stopping Jamal Musiala’s low shot just before halftime.
The second half initially saw Bayern dominate possession, yet PSG remained a threat on the counter. As Bayern sought two goals, PSG exploited more space, coming close to scoring through Desire Doue and Kvaratskhelia in the closing stages.
Bayern’s star striker Harry Kane, who had been relatively quiet throughout the match, managed to find the net with a stoppage-time equalizer, marking his seventh consecutive game with a goal in the competition. However, his 55th goal for Bayern this season came too late, as the match concluded with Bayern unable to secure the necessary goals.
