Rahul Gandhi’s Visit to Gurgaon: A Potential Catalyst for Unity Among Haryana Congress Factions During Brijendra Singh’s Sadbhav Yatra

Rahul Gandhi, a prominent leader of the Congress party, plans to participate in the ongoing ‘Sadbhav Yatra’ led by former Haryana MP Brijendra Singh in Gurgaon. This move is likely to prompt the state party leadership, which has been uninvolved in the rally for the past seven months, to show their support.

Brijendra confirmed to The Indian Express that Gandhi will join the yatra on Friday evening, expected to arrive around 4 PM. The event will encompass two constituencies, Badshahpur and Gurgaon, lasting approximately 90 minutes, concluding with a speech by Gandhi.

Gandhi’s presence during the final phase of the yatra is interpreted as a gesture of support for Brijendra’s initiative in light of the factionalism within the Haryana Congress. Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the leader of the Haryana Congress Legislature Party, expressed his intention to attend if Gandhi is present, although he did not have specific details about the program yet.

In addition to Hooda, several key figures are expected to join the yatra, including Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee president Rao Narender Singh, Lok Sabha members Kumari Selja, Deepender Hooda, Jai Prakash, Varun Chaudhry, and Satpal Brahmchari.

Brijendra, who previously served as an MP for Hisar, has been spearheading the statewide Sadbhav Yatra as part of a broader initiative aimed at promoting social cohesion, addressing farmers’ issues, tackling unemployment, and reinforcing the Congress party’s grassroots presence. Launched in October 2025, this campaign has traversed various regions of Haryana, becoming one of the most prominent political movements for Congress in the state since the 2024 elections.

Throughout the yatra, notable participants have included Brijendra’s father and former Union minister Birender Singh, Sirsa MP Kumari Selja, Rajya Sabha member Randeep Surjewala, Kaithal MLA Aditya Surjewala, former Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kuldeep Sharma, and several other Congress leaders and legislators.

Some party insiders suggest that while Gandhi’s visit may attract state leaders to Gurgaon, it is unlikely to resolve the existing factions within Haryana Congress. They believe that the attendance will be more about Gandhi’s presence rather than a unified support for the yatra, potentially influencing the upcoming civic body elections on May 10.

The ‘Sadbhav Yatra’ commenced on October 5, 2025, from Danoda village in the Narwana constituency of Jind district. At its inception, Brijendra declared that the march would encompass all 90 Assembly constituencies across Haryana, covering nearly 2,600 kilometers on foot over several months. The campaign aims to promote the ideals of “bhaichara (brotherhood)” while addressing pressing issues such as agriculture, unemployment, governance, and social divisions.

The first phase of the yatra concentrated on central and western Haryana, starting from Narwana and passing through Jind, Safidon, Julana, Uchana, Kalayat, and Narnaund before reaching Hisar. During this segment, Brijendra emphasized farmers’ challenges, unemployment, and reconnecting with Congress workers at the grassroots level.

In November, the initiative extended into southern Haryana, navigating through Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Mahendragarh, and Rewari districts, highlighting concerns regarding rural infrastructure, youth outmigration, and the economic struggles faced by farmers and laborers.

By December, the yatra progressed into the Mewat and National Capital Region, focusing on issues related to communal harmony, urban-rural infrastructure, and disparities. The subsequent phases targeted northern Haryana, addressing unemployment, law and order, education, and social polarization.

As the campaign moved into the agrarian regions of western Haryana, Brijendra intensified his critique of the BJP-led government, particularly regarding delays in crop procurement, compensation matters, and the plight of farmers suffering from recurrent weather-related adversities.

In its final stages, the yatra shifted towards Haryana’s industrial and politically significant areas. By the end of April, it had covered over 2,000 kilometers and included more than 80 Assembly constituencies, marking a significant journey in the state’s political landscape.
