FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The Sri Lankan Police are set to launch initiatives aimed at educating the public about cybercrimes targeting women and children, according to Minister of Public Security K M Ananda Wijepala. This announcement comes in light of a significant rise in reported cybercrimes in the year 2025.
During a parliamentary session, Wijepala addressed inquiries from MP Rajeevan Jeyachandramoorthy regarding the prevalence of cybercrime cases involving women. He noted that dedicated cybercrime units have been established across all provinces to tackle this issue.
In 2023, there were 4,103 reported incidents of cybercrime against women, with 755 cases successfully resolved, leaving 3,348 cases unresolved and still under investigation or prosecution. The following year, 2024, saw 3,159 cases reported, with 982 resolved and 2,177 still pending.
The trend continued into 2025, as the number of reported cases surged to 4,742. Of these, only 572 cases were resolved, resulting in 4,170 cases that remain under investigation or prosecution.
