According to reports from ABC Gold Coast, a significant data breach has affected numerous students and educators in Queensland, potentially exposing personal details such as names, school affiliations, and email addresses.

The state government has indicated that preliminary assessments show the breach involves individuals associated with Queensland state schools dating back to 2020. Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek stated that the breach could have ramifications for over 200 million individuals globally, spanning more than 9,000 educational institutions, including schools and universities.

In a related incident, TasTafe from Tasmania disclosed that some of its students’ information might have been compromised due to a cybersecurity incident involving the Canvas learning management system, which is operated by Instructure. Other educational entities are also currently assessing the effects of this breach.

TasTafe confirmed that Instructure had informed them that a “criminal third party” had gained access to their data. The institution noted that the compromised data could include personal information, such as messages stored within the Canvas platform.

Importantly, Instructure, which provides the Queensland Education Department’s online learning platform known as QLearn, has stated that there is no evidence suggesting that passwords, birth dates, or financial information have been accessed during this breach.

Minister Langbroek mentioned that school leaders are reaching out to affected families and educators to inform them about the situation. He emphasized that the compromised information primarily includes names, email addresses, and school locations.

As of now, it appears that the compromised data has not been made public. The Minister also noted that the Department of Education is prioritizing support for families known to child safety services or those with a documented history of domestic violence. He assured that updates would be provided to the public as more information becomes available.
