Authorities apprehended three individuals in connection with the tragic death of a 14-year-old boy who died from head injuries sustained when a brick fell on him from the seventh floor of a building under construction in Sanjauli.

The incident occurred on April 29, and the victim, Tanish Kaushal, was taken to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) in Shimla on the same day. Unfortunately, he passed away from his injuries on Sunday night, according to official reports.

According to sources, Tanish, a ninth-grade student, was on his way home from school when the brick struck him. Bystanders quickly transported him to IGMC for medical attention. He was the only child of his parents, who reside in the Una district.

The Sanjauli Police Station has opened an investigation into the incident. Authorities indicated that safety measures at the construction site were lacking.

Shanta Lal Chopra, the owner of the construction site, has been arrested and faces charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder as stated in a formal complaint filed by the police.

A police spokesperson mentioned, “Initially, the FIR was filed under charges related to negligent behavior that endangers others’ lives. Following the victim’s passing, Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which addresses culpable homicide not amounting to murder, was incorporated. The accused has been remanded to judicial custody as of today.”

On Monday, Shimla police also detained two additional suspects, including a construction contractor and a mason. They have been identified as Avneet, hailing from Krishna Nagar, and Mohammed Iqbal from Shimla’s Lakkar Bazaar.

A police official remarked, “The two individuals were charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Inspections at the scene indicate that safety protocols were inadequate. Specifically, there were no nets installed around the construction site to prevent debris from falling onto the ground.”
