Arsenal has clinched the Premier League title for the first time since the legendary Invincibles season under Arsène Wenger in 2004, following a 1-1 draw between Manchester City and Bournemouth.
This achievement marks a significant milestone for Mikel Arteta in his inaugural managerial role, as he has successfully transformed Arsenal into a competitive force since taking over from Unai Emery in December 2019. The team had finished as runners-up in the previous three seasons and led the standings for the majority of this year until Manchester City narrowed Arsenal’s nine-point advantage after defeating them at the Etihad Stadium in April.
Despite previous disappointments, Arteta’s squad demonstrated resilience in what effectively became a decisive five-match contest between the two rivals. The turning point came when City faltered with a draw against Everton, while Arsenal capitalized by securing four consecutive victories without conceding a single goal, culminating in a narrow 1-0 win against Burnley on Monday.
Arteta admitted he anticipated difficulty in watching the pivotal match between City and Bournemouth, given its implications. However, Arsenal supporters gathered in local pubs near the Emirates Stadium, eagerly awaiting a favorable outcome, and erupted in celebration at the final whistle, spilling into the streets. Within just ten minutes of the title being confirmed, thousands of fans made their way towards the Emirates in jubilant procession.
Arsenal is set to receive the Premier League trophy at Selhurst Park on Sunday, following their match against Crystal Palace. Additionally, with Pep Guardiola’s departure from City after a decade soon to be announced, Arteta will become the longest-serving manager in England’s top four divisions. He also has the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of his mentor by winning the Champions League when Arsenal faces Paris Saint-Germain on May 30. Historically, only five English clubs have succeeded in winning both the top division and the European Cup in the same season, with City being the most recent to achieve this in 2023.
Further updates will follow soon.
