Embrace Acid Exfoliants: A Softer, More Effective Alternative to Scrubs

The term “acid exfoliant” often intimidates those with sensitive skin; however, these products can significantly enhance skin texture and ensure makeup applies smoothly and lasts longer.

In reality, a liquid formulation that features a balanced mix of alpha or beta hydroxy acids designed to remove dead skin cells is typically much gentler and more effective than traditional gritty physical scrubs that many still prefer.

The impact of South Korea’s highly sought-after milky toners, which prioritize hydration and the protection of the skin barrier, is evident in a new wave of milky acid exfoliants. These products combine powerful skin-clearing acids with soothing and skin-softening agents to minimize irritation.

Among the latest offerings from the U.S. brand Naturium, the Multi Bright Milky Toner (priced at £19) stands out. This formulation features exfoliating polyhydroxy acid gluconolactone, which is gentler than many alternatives, alongside azelaic acid for addressing uneven skin tone. It also includes moisturizing components like squalane, glycerin, and rice bran oil to promote smoothness and brightness.

This toner is an excellent choice for individuals who have sought the radiance provided by glycolic acid toners but found them too intense or irritating. For those with resilient skin accustomed to acids, Naturium’s corresponding serum (priced at £26), which combines lactic and glycolic acids, may offer a more robust option. I have used the toner frequently in recent weeks and found it just as effective as other exfoliants without any discomfort.

Trinny Woodall shares a similar perspective. Her brand, Trinny London, has introduced the Tiptoe In exfoliant (priced at £36), a milky serum that is applied directly with the hands post-cleansing. This product serves as a milder alternative to the brand’s well-known Reveal Yourself exfoliant, utilizing gluconolactone for gentle exfoliation, while also incorporating lactobionic acid, another gentle polyhydroxy acid. Additionally, the inclusion of humectant trehalose provides a plumping and comfortable layer that lasts throughout the day.

It’s important to note that sensitive skin does not necessarily mean a lack of moisture; oily skin types can also react adversely to harsh chemicals. The Ordinary’s Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner (priced at £12.40) is an exquisite product that offers great value for money and is suitable for both dry and oily skin, as well as everything in between. Using a saturated cotton pad, it effectively removes dead skin and excess oil without leaving my dry skin feeling stripped.

I would recommend incorporating these products into your routine approximately four times a week after cleansing and potentially increasing to daily use if your skin responds well.
