Mouni Roy Unveils ‘Bombay Stories’ at Cannes 2026, Dazzling in a Patola Dress Handcrafted Over 300 Hours

Mouni Roy presented the official first look of her upcoming film, Bombay Stories, during the Cannes Film Festival, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of Gujarat’s Patola textiles. She shared her excitement on Instagram, stating, “Today, I launched my film’s poster and teaser here in Cannes. This is a significant moment for me. (Pictures coming soon). For those unfamiliar, this is the beautiful Gujarati Patola work, which I find absolutely stunning. (sic)”

Discussing her stunning outfit, Roy expressed her pride in wearing a creation by Puja Shah, highlighting that the dress took 300 hours to embroider, crafted by dedicated artisans. The vibrant blue attire from The House of Patola featured a square neckline, adorned with striking red and yellow geometric designs. Patola textiles have a rich history rooted in ancient Gujarat, traditionally donned by royalty and the elite as emblems of wealth and status. Renowned for their vivid colors, intricate patterns, and resilience, these handwoven fabrics are the result of a labor-intensive process that can take several months to complete.

In addition to her film promotional activities, the Wazir actress shared glimpses of a photoshoot in which she looked radiant in a stylish cream halter neck dress. She captioned her Instagram post, “Wear your worth like a sun-kissed morning.” Styled by Sanam Ratansi, her makeup featured a soft, dewy finish with a touch of pink on her lips, and her hair was elegantly styled in soft, side-swept waves. Completing her look, she wore champagne gold stiletto heels by Aleví Milano, enhancing her glamorous appearance.

Meanwhile, fellow actress Ruchi Gujjar, who holds the title of Miss Haryana 2023, made a bold statement on the Cannes red carpet by embracing the ghunghat, a traditional garment, as part of the ‘Freedom From Ghunghat’ movement. Dressed beautifully in a pink ghagra choli, she took to Instagram to convey her message: “मेरा घूंघट चुप्पी नहीं, विरोध है (My ghunghat is a symbol of respect and pride, but it is never a sentence of my silence 🙏),” sparking considerable online discussion.

While some social media users criticized her choice of attire, arguing that wearing a ghunghat at an international event while advocating for freedom from it seemed contradictory and hypocritical, others praised her for sending a powerful message that blended tradition with a global platform, expressing their admiration and respect for her stance.
