Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Rome where he dined with his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni. Following their meal, the two leaders toured the famed Colosseum, an event that generated significant buzz on social media.
In a series of posts on X, PM Modi shared images from his visit to the Colosseum alongside Meloni. He remarked, “After my arrival in Rome, I had the pleasure of dining with Prime Minister Meloni, which was followed by a visit to the iconic Colosseum.”
He further noted, “We discussed a variety of topics and I am eager for our discussions today, as we aim to strengthen the friendship between India and Italy.”
The Colosseum, constructed in 80 AD during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, was completed by his sons, Emperors Titus and Domitian, after his death. The structure gets its name from a massive bronze statue of Emperor Nero that once stood nearby.
Situated in the heart of Rome, the Colosseum holds the title of the largest ancient amphitheater and remains the largest standing amphitheater worldwide. This oval-shaped edifice covers six acres, measuring 189 meters in length, 156 meters in width, and reaching a height of 894 meters, featuring three levels adorned with a series of semi-circular arches.
According to its official website, these arches, supported by travertine stone pillars and columns, can accommodate up to 50,000 spectators. The arches rise nearly 30 meters tall, contributing to a total of 80 arches within the grand structure. The lower level served primarily for administrative functions, while the upper tiers were designed to host large gatherings, events, and assemblies for the Roman populace.
The exterior of the Colosseum is richly embellished with decorative stonework, including arches, niches, and ornamental details, alongside columns that taper elegantly towards the top. Four main entrances, each featuring columned porticos, provide access to the arena’s galleries.
Its impressive architectural design is complemented by sophisticated irrigation and drainage systems that prevented flooding and water accumulation, ensuring the seamless organization of events within the arena. The Colosseum stands as a testament to architectural ingenuity, merging functionality with aesthetic splendor, and continues to attract visitors from around the globe.
Having garnered over 90 million votes for the initiative led by B Weber, the Colosseum was recognized as one of the New Wonders of the World. The site has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is regarded as one of the most significant and popular historical attractions globally, according to the website.
Additionally, the Colosseum is among the most visited archaeological sites in the world, with over 60 million visitors reportedly exploring the site in the past decade.
