On Wednesday, Firhad Hakim, a senior leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), announced his resignation from the position of Mayor of Kolkata. His decision was accepted by party leader Mamata Banerjee, as confirmed by TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh.
Hakim, a significant figure within the party and a close confidant of Banerjee, had previously requested to resign but was advised against it at that time. However, he approached Banerjee once more on Wednesday, expressing his desire to step down, which she ultimately approved, Ghosh revealed to the media.
This resignation occurs amidst increasing instability within the TMC, coinciding with a wave of resignations from party councillors in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) in recent weeks.
Hakim’s departure is seen as a considerable loss for the TMC, particularly as the party faces internal challenges following its recent electoral defeats in the state.
Currently, there has been no announcement regarding Hakim’s successor as the Mayor of Kolkata.
Since taking office in 2018, Hakim has been a prominent representative of the minority community within the TMC and has held various significant ministerial roles in the state government over the years.
The TMC has maintained control over the KMC since 2010.
