Sali Hughes Shares Her Top Picks for Summer’s Best Facial Self-Tanners

As spring and summer approach, many individuals find it essential to incorporate a facial self-tanner into their beauty routine. Preferring to move away from heavier foundations that can feel cumbersome in warmer weather, a lighter, more natural self-tanner serves as an ideal base for makeup.

There is a common misconception that using self-tanner is a complicated and risky process, leaving many to question how to integrate it into their skincare regimen. However, a new variety of facial self-tanners has emerged, addressing these concerns with ease of use.

Until recently, I had not experienced the tanning products from TV personality Vogue Williams, but her new Overnight Tan Mask (£26) piqued my interest. This luxurious yet non-greasy cream applies smoothly to the face and neck like a traditional night cream, delivering a golden hue while you sleep. The resulting shade is subtle and easily buildable, requiring several applications before anyone might suspect a tan.

If you have oily skin and prefer lighter formulas, you might appreciate Pixi’s GradualGlow (£18). This brand, which gained popularity in the 2010s, is making a strong comeback with several impressive new products. GradualGlow is suitable for both the face and body but is more economical when used on smaller areas, making it ideal for the neck and face. Use it as a daily moisturizer to gradually achieve a natural tan over the week; simply revert to your regular cream once you’ve reached your desired color. It applies evenly and begins to develop in about three hours.

For those who follow a multi-step skincare routine, tanning specialist James Read offers various options for incorporating self-tanner. His Break of Dawn Rejuvenating Glow Mask (£39) can be applied and rinsed off just 20 minutes later, allowing you to use additional products as desired. I have personally tested it and found it to be highly effective. However, I am particularly impressed with Read’s new Golden Days Milky Tan Toner (£39), which was released in late May. This calming, hydrating toner is applied right after cleansing and before serum and sunscreen, allowing you to skip moisturizer if preferred. It provides a beautifully natural finish, enhancing all skin tones from light to deep.

Lastly, don’t overlook the budget-friendly option available at Superdrug. Their Solait Self-Tan Sleep Mask, priced at just £5, offers impressive results at an affordable cost. Apply it weekly before bedtime to wake up with a radiant summer glow.
