Three months after guiding India to victory in the T20 World Cup on home turf, Suryakumar Yadav has been relieved of his captaincy role and is not expected to feature in the team moving forward. This decision comes ahead of upcoming tours to Ireland and England later this month.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), in collaboration with the team’s management and selection committee, is set to appoint a new captain as they embark on a new cycle.
A senior BCCI official stated to The Indian Express, “The selection committee, alongside BCCI and team management, in consultation with coach Gautam Gambhir, has determined that India should transition to a new captain. Although Surya led the team to a T20 World Cup victory, his ongoing form and future prospects prompted the decision to move on.”
The official also confirmed, “He will no longer be in contention for selection, and we will communicate this decision to Surya shortly.”
India’s upcoming schedule includes two T20 internationals in Ireland followed by five matches in England.
Concerns regarding Surya’s batting form have persisted, as he has struggled significantly over the past two years, including a disappointing performance in the 2026 IPL season. Although he concluded the season with a half-century against the Rajasthan Royals, he managed to score only 270 runs across 13 innings, yielding an average of 20.76 this season.
Despite leading India to its third T20 World Cup title in March, Surya’s batting has been under considerable scrutiny. He took on the T20I captaincy following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the format after the World Cup victory in the West Indies in 2024.
