Mumbai is anticipated to experience 24 days of high tides during the upcoming monsoon season, a notable increase from last year’s count of 19 days observed between June and October. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) defines a “high tide” as sea waves reaching heights of over 4.5 meters.
Out of the 24 predicted high tide days, six are expected to occur from June 14 to June 19, with wave heights varying from 4.64 to 4.87 meters. The municipal authorities have advised residents to refrain from approaching the coastline during these high tide periods and to adhere to any advisories released by local authorities.
Officials have highlighted that the peak tide of the season is forecasted for July 16, when waves may rise to 4.89 meters at approximately 1:36 PM. The distribution of high tide days throughout the monsoon includes six in June, six in July, five in August, and seven in September.
It was noted by officials that high tides occurring alongside heavy rainfall could impede stormwater drainage into the ocean, increasing the likelihood of waterlogging in areas prone to flooding. As such, the civic administration has urged those residing near the coast to remain alert and avoid entering the sea during specified times.
In response to the situation, lifeguards and marshals have been stationed at various coastal locations. A municipal official stated, “Temporary accommodations have been arranged in municipal schools and community halls for residents in low-lying areas during high tide events.”
Additionally, members of the fishing community have been instructed to secure their boats and vessels at safe distances from rocky shorelines to minimize the risk of accidents and damage.
