The progression of the World Cup is established from the outset, with no additional draws to determine matchups in later stages. The tournament is designed to enhance excitement, primarily by preventing the strongest teams from facing each other too early and encouraging all 48 competing teams to field their best players in each match.

In this format, the top two teams from each group automatically advance to the knockout stage. This means that a group winner will encounter a second- or third-placed team from another group in the next round. For example, it is hoped that a team like France will strive to secure a victory in their final group match, even after qualifying, to face potentially weaker opponents in the round of 32.

Conversely, teams that anticipate finishing third in their groups still have motivation to perform well in their last match. The eight highest-ranked third-placed teams across the 12 groups also qualify for the knockout stage.

Consider England as a hypothetical case. If they secure the top position in their group, their first knockout round opponent will likely be a third-placed team, potentially from a pool of 20 teams, such as Côte d’Ivoire or Algeria. Should they finish second, they might face the runner-up from Group K, likely to be Colombia. If they end up in third place but possess a superior points total or goal difference compared to other third-placed teams, they could face a tougher opponent, possibly the winner of Group K, which could be Portugal. The simulation tool accounts for all 495 possible group combinations that result in identifying the eight best third-placed teams.

This simulation feature allows users to alter group results and observe how those changes impact the last 32 teams. Users can also envision the outcomes of each knockout match to map out the potential journey of each team toward the final.
