Elderly Man Set to Admit Guilt in Canberra Accident Resulting in Child’s Fatality

An elderly woman, aged 80, is anticipated to enter a guilty plea regarding culpable driving that resulted in a fatality during an incident at a shopping center in Canberra, which claimed the life of a four-year-old boy.

Maureen Brew faces charges of culpable driving causing death, along with an alternative charge of negligent driving causing death stemming from the event that occurred in January.

According to law enforcement, Brew was operating a blue hatchback when her vehicle struck the young boy before veering into the storefront of the Southlands Shopping Centre in Mawson, shortly before 10:30 AM on January 18.

Emergency responders, along with bystanders, provided immediate assistance to the child at the scene before he was transported to a hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

During a preliminary mention of her case at the ACT Magistrates Court today, Ms. Brew was absent. However, her attorney indicated that she would plead guilty to the charge of culpable driving causing death.

The matter is scheduled to return to court in June for further proceedings.
