Former Magistrate Peter Liddy Released from Prison After Serving 25 Years for Child Offenses

Peter Liddy, a former magistrate and convicted paedophile, has been released from prison after completing a 25-year sentence for the sexual abuse of four minors. Now 82 years old, Liddy has been placed under a stringent home-detention supervision order as he reenters society.

The South Australian government is actively seeking to have him either indefinitely detained or subjected to an extended supervision order to ensure public safety. Liddy’s release follows a Supreme Court ruling that dismissed his request to halt these ongoing legal proceedings.

Upon his release from the Adelaide Remand Centre, Liddy had little to say, merely responding to media inquiries with a brief “excuse me.” His interim supervision order imposes several restrictions, including limited internet access and a complete ban on contact with children. He is also prohibited from being within 50 meters of schools, kindergartens, or public playgrounds.

Last month, the Supreme Court was informed that the location where Liddy would reside was still under evaluation, with various complexities that could not be disclosed in open court. Advocate Andrew Carpenter, who represents abuse survivors, expressed deep concern for the victims, stating that many never anticipated Liddy would be released. He described the day as a profoundly somber one for those affected, indicating a significant setback for the survivor community in South Australia.
