Ryan Ten Doeschate, the assistant coach for India, revealed that Rishabh Pant and former cricketer Gautam Gambhir engaged in a discussion prior to India’s upcoming Test match against Afghanistan, which is set to take place in Mullanpur on Saturday. Pant has faced challenges with his performance recently, particularly regarding his dismissals during last year’s Test series against South Africa, which have drawn criticism.
“He is dedicated to being a positive role model and a senior player,” Ten Doeschate commented when questioned about Pant’s adaptation to recent changes, including his removal from the vice-captaincy. “I actually overheard him and Gauti (a nickname for Gambhir) discussing how to conduct oneself as a senior player, including aspects of communication and gameplay.”
The former Dutch international emphasized that a formal title is not essential for Pant to take on a leadership role within such a high-level team. “I believe Rishabh recognizes that,” he added.
Ten Doeschate also expressed the team’s desire for Pant to maintain his exceptional skills while encouraging him to temper his impulsiveness based on the context of the match. “We don’t want to diminish Rishabh’s brilliance; however, it would be beneficial if he can adjust his approach to align more with match situations. That is an area we hope to see him develop,” he stated.
Moreover, Ten Doeschate noted that Pant is in good spirits, highlighting his joyful demeanor that positively influences team morale. “He is always cheerful and contributes significantly to the team’s spirit. There are no complaints regarding him, and his change in leadership role is hardly noticeable, so we have no concerns about Rishabh. I am eager to see him on the field again,” he remarked.
The forthcoming Test match between India and Afghanistan marks the beginning of Afghanistan’s tour of India, which will be succeeded by three One Day Internationals (ODIs). This match will also be notable as it will be the inaugural Test played at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh.
