Introducing Dreambeans: Google’s Innovative AI Solution to Combat Doomscrolling

Google Labs, known for its innovative AI projects, has introduced an application named Dreambeans that offers users a tailored selection of AI-generated narratives based on their daily experiences.

Utilizing information from various Google services, Dreambeans curates a limited array of stories presented in different formats. These narratives primarily focus on lifestyle tips, suggesting destinations, activities to explore, upcoming events, and travel plans relevant to the user.

Additionally, the app aggregates news articles that align with the user’s interests, featuring animations or illustrations produced by AI technologies.

Dreambeans aims to mitigate the habit of doomscrolling—an incessant scroll through negative news—by presenting users with only 10 to 14 stories each day. In a blog post dated June 3, Google emphasized that the purpose is not to engage in endless scrolling but to offer a finite selection designed to inspire and help users concentrate on what truly matters.

As concerns about smartphone and social media addiction grow, several companies are developing solutions for users seeking to reduce their screen time. For instance, the app Bond employs AI to generate personalized lifestyle recommendations. This trend follows increasing worries regarding social media’s adverse effects on children’s mental well-being.

In 2022, Australia became the first nation to prohibit access to platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat for users under 16. Following this, numerous governments have indicated they are contemplating similar regulations.

Furthermore, a significant court ruling in March 2026 found Meta and Google negligent for creating social media platforms that pose risks to young users. The court awarded $6 million to a 20-year-old woman who claimed her social media addiction began in childhood. Both companies have denied the allegations, asserting that they implement extensive safety measures for young users.

Google described Dreambeans as a tool “to proactively dream up personalized daily stories that cut through the clutter and connect you to what matters.” Currently, the app is accessible exclusively to users aged 18 and above who subscribe to Google AI Ultra in the United States, available on both Android and iOS platforms. Other users can join a waitlist by signing up with their Google accounts.

Initially conceived as an experiment within Google Labs, Dreambeans emerged from a concept shared by a small team aiming to create an app that connects users to relevant content without the endless scroll. Josh Woodward, VP of Google Labs, shared that the idea was encapsulated in the phrase, “Hope scrolling, not doom scrolling.”

The app’s name, Dreambeans, reflects its functionality, as noted by product lead Gozde Oznur. She explained that the “dream” aspect refers to the app’s ability to process data while the user sleeps, distilling a significant amount of information into concise suggestions. The “beans” component symbolizes starting the day refreshed, much like brewing a cup of coffee that delivers concentrated inspiration.

Each story within Dreambeans features a unique AI-generated illustration that mirrors the user’s frequent interactions and interests. For instance, if a user receives an order confirmation for dog treats via Gmail, Dreambeans will create a story with training tips for dogs. Similarly, it can draw from a Google Calendar entry about a meeting to suggest nearby dog-friendly eateries.

Users can further explore stories by tapping on them, and they have the option to save favorites in the app’s library for later reference. If a recommendation does not meet expectations, users can provide feedback to improve future story relevancy.

Dreambeans harnesses Google’s Personal Intelligence and Nano Banana 2 AI image generator to create its AI-illustrated narratives. To deliver personalized content, the app requires users to connect it with at least one additional Google service, such as Gmail, Calendar, Photos, YouTube, or Search history, with optimal performance occurring when all services are linked.

The app also possesses the capacity to search the internet for relevant information to facilitate user actions. To ensure privacy, Google guarantees that only the user can view the stories generated by the app. Users retain the ability to delete their data at any time and decide which Google services to link to Dreambeans.

Google clarified that choices made within Dreambeans do not influence decisions made in other products like Gemini Apps or AI Mode related to Personal Intelligence.
