On Wednesday, the police took into custody Jay Prakash Majumdar, a spokesperson and vice-president of the Trinamool Congress, for allegedly unlawfully occupying a woman’s residence for an extended period and for purportedly harassing her.
According to reports, a demonstration by local residents against Majumdar took place outside his flat in Bidhannagar, which escalated into a confrontation. Police responded to the scene, apprehended Majumdar, and transported him to the Bidhannagar North police station, where he was officially arrested. He is facing accusations of illegally occupying the property and making offensive remarks towards the landowner while also issuing threats.
It has been reported that Majumdar has occupied the flat in Bidhannagar for approximately 12 years. He initially rented the property in 2012, with the lease expiring in 2015. Allegations suggest that he neither renewed the lease nor vacated the premises thereafter. The property owner, Arati Raychaudhari, claims that Majumdar has also ceased to pay rent for the flat.
On the day of the incident, a crowd gathered to protest against Majumdar, during which he allegedly assaulted some of the demonstrators. Upon receiving this information, police intervened and detained him.
The complainant has stated that she had previously issued legal notices to Majumdar and his family, demanding that they vacate her property. However, she claims these notices were ignored, and Majumdar continued to insult and threaten her. She also mentioned that just a few days prior, she, along with others, attempted to enter the flat to demand his eviction, but Majumdar was not present, resulting in a confrontation with his wife.
The complainant expressed that during the tenure of the Trinamool Congress, Majumdar held considerable political power, which hindered her ability to seek justice. She further asserted that after the BJP assumed power, she confronted Majumdar regarding the situation.
In an unrelated incident, the Kolkata Police arrested Mahesh Kumar Sharma, a Councilor from Ward No 42 and son of the late Sagar Mall Sharma, on Wednesday. Sharma’s arrest is linked to a case that originated in 2025.
