President Donald Trump announced that the United States intends to recover Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium once the ongoing conflict concludes, a key issue that has hindered diplomatic negotiations between the two nations.
Trump acknowledged the difficulties involved in obtaining the nuclear material but reiterated the U.S. commitment to securing it. “The B-2 bombers executed an unprecedented mission. Under the cover of night, they successfully deployed those massive bombs at around 1:00 AM in total darkness,” he remarked on Wednesday.
He emphasized his determination to retrieve the enriched uranium after hostilities cease, expressing concern for the safety of American personnel amidst the conflict. “Acquiring that material is quite challenging, but I want it nonetheless. I prefer not to take risks while we are engaged in combat. I recall the challenges faced by Jimmy Carter during the Iran hostage crisis, and I want to avoid putting our troops in similar jeopardy. However, once the conflict is resolved, it is understood that we will proceed to secure and eliminate it,” he stated.
On the topic of negotiations, Trump mentioned that talks with Iran are progressing positively and could produce outcomes by the upcoming weekend. “I understand that the negotiations are going quite well,” he told the press, while noting that a potential agreement may or may not materialize soon. “It could happen over the weekend.”
Additionally, Trump expressed a desire to keep discussions regarding Lebanon distinct from the U.S.-Iran negotiations. “I would prefer to separate these discussions, as they pertain to different matters,” he said.
In response, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that the conflict with the United States and Israel would only conclude when hostilities in Lebanon are resolved. “We maintain a consistent stance regarding a ceasefire and the end of the war,” Araghchi remarked during an interview with the Arab media outlet Al Mayadeen, which was subsequently disseminated by Iran’s foreign ministry.
